Gastroscopy

A Gastroscopy (upper endoscopy) is a day procedure that takes place in a hospital setting.  This procedure allows your doctor to view the inside lining of your oesophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine by passing a flexible tube, with a light and camera attached, through the mouth.  An anaesthetist provides medication so that you are asleep during the procedure which takes approximately 10 minutes. Some fasting is required prior to your Gastroscopy and we will provide you with detailed instructions regarding your procedure preparation.

Your doctor will provide results on the day of your procedure.  If a biopsy is required (a small sample of tissue sent to the laboratory for testing), the results will be available within a few days of the procedure.

Recovery time is brief, although you may have a sore throat for up to 24 hours.  Due to your anaesthetic you will not be able to drive after your procedure. You will need a responsible adult to take you home from hospital.
