Iron Infusion

An iron infusion is an effective way of managing iron deficiency, whether this is due to poor dietary iron intake, iron malabsorption (due to digestion issues), or due to blood loss. Iron is usually infused over 15-minutes, and is performed in a day infusion unit. A liquid iron preparation is delivered through a cannula (straw into a vein). Iron infusions are usually very well-tolerated. Some people can be sensitive to the infusion, and rarely, patients can get iron staining if the cannula is outside of a vein. For this reason, patients are observed very carefully throughout the procedure. Iron infusions are generally very safe and well-tolerated. Most patients who have symptoms of iron infusion begin feeling improved within days of the infusion.
